Built in mid-1970’s in order to host the numerous visitors from all over the SU, Pripyat hotel Polissya is now hosting only ghosts and shadows of Chernobyl zone.
Hotel “Polissya” is located in the geographical center of the city – on the main square of Pripyat, near the city park and alley of Lenin.
The building has just few storeys, and according to the project, on the top floor of the hotel a café with outdoor terrace and panoramic views was planned, but the it wasn’t realized unfortunately. Now the view from the top of the hotel is a little different.
Former nice and cozy hotel room are now hosting just shadows, and and the hotel corridors are empty and terrifying, especially when coming by night. The elevators are as though frozen in time, waiting for passengers, and the restaurant kitchen won’t be used ever again like everything else here.
After the accident, hotel “Polissya” was involved in the process of liquidation of the Chernobyl accident too. Here, next to the City Council (which was headquarter of the liquidation works management), it was convenient to locate dosimetry workers and soldiers. Also, since the fourth block is seen perfectly well from the roof top, it was a place for spotters directing actions of pilots flying in helicopters above the reactor to drop sacks with sand and other materials to seal the gap.
After nearly a quarter century of these tragic events, on the walls of the building the figures “Shadows of Hiroshima” were made by artists as symbol of the shadow left from those who died during nuclear disasters in a hope that anything like won’t happen ever again.
